The Fables of Aesop, designed and drawn on the wood by Charles H. Bennett, published in London, 1875. Charles Bennett was a self-taught and extremely talented artist and caricaturist working in London during the Golden Age of Caricature. Born in 1829, he only lived 38 years, but during that time was a most prolific artist and illustrator, frequently contributing to Punch Magazine as well as illustrating many children's books. A contemporary of Thomas Nast and Honore Daumier, he chose a style somewhat different from most of his peers. Rather than satirizing public figures by accentuating their physical characteristics, Bennett preferred dressing animals as people and using them to make his frequently biting and moral points. At first glance, his illustrations appear cute, but on further examination the barbs become clearer. These wood engravings from the 1875 edition of the Fables of Aesop have original color and retain the clarity and brightness from their publication over 125 years ago. There is some marginal soiling that does not extend into the print.
