The Belgian Journal "Chasse et Peche" – "Hunting and Fishing", was published between 1882 and 1970. It featured many articles and illustrations of various animal groups and was very influential in identifying differences among breeds (see Chasse et Peche - Dogs elsewhere on this website). Louis Van der Snickt (1837-1911) became its chief editor. He was the former manager of the zoological gardens of Ghent and Dusseldorf.
Many of the horse prints featured here were done by Alexandre Clarys (Belgian, 1857 to 1920). He was a painter of dogs and race horses, a poster artist and illustrator. Clarys specialized in scenes with animals in a realistic style. He produced works that were used for posters for horse shows and races, and exhibited regularly in the Antwerp, Brussels and Ghent Salons between 1888 and 1914. These chromololithographs were printed by the Belgian firms G. Severeyns and J.L. Goffart, notable for their fine craftmanship. They come from editions published between 1892 and 1898.Size (in): 12.5 x 9
