The Belgian Journal "Chasse et Peche" – "Hunting and Fishing", was published between 1882 and 1970. It featured many articles and illustrations of various animal groups and was very influential in identifying differences among breeds. Louis Van der Snickt (1837-1911) became its chief editor. He was the former manager of the zoological gardens of Ghent and Dusseldorf and was known for his expertise in breeding poultry. He contributed illustrations for other animals, among them the dogs featured here. These prints are wood engravings, colored at a later date. They come from editions published between 1892 and 1898. The publication of the magazine gave rise to the Société Royale Saint-Hubert, still existing, whose sole purpose is for the maintenance and improvement of breeds of dogs in Belgium.
