The Royal Natural History by Richard Lydekker, 1894 – 1895
The Royal Natural History by Richard Lydekker, 1894 - 1895. Lydekker, (1848 - 1945) was an English authority on mammals of the world, particularly game animals. He wrote and published widely on fossil mammalian and reptilian and in 1882 took a position with the British Museum of Natural History. His Royal Natural History appeared at a time when illustrated encyclopedias were in great demand by the general public; in part brought about by the ability, thanks to lithography, to publish large numbers of such works at a modest cost. It was common at that time to reuse images from other works, but many of the plates in Lydekker's work were specially commissioned from such leading artists as Kuhnert, Smit, Wolf, et al.
