London Types by William Nicholson, Published in London, 1898
London Types followed the publication of the very successful Alphabet. At the end of the nineteenth century Londoners seem to have enjoyed a love affair with their city and some of its more colorful denizens, even going so far as to adopt the dress styles of some of them. James Pryde (Nicholson's partner in the poster duo "TheBeggarstaff Brothers" affected the style of a London bus driver, while Mabel Nicholson adopted the costume of the coster. This set of twelve images was arrived at after much discussion with his publisher - William Heinemann - who was responsible, among other things, for suggesting the inclusion of more women. Although rejecting some of the suggested subjects, this is one that Nicholson embraced, much to the delight of his public. The series offers us a delightful glimpse of London at the turn of the century. 11" by 13"
